!!! (pronounced Chk Chk Chk) burst onto the scene in the 2000s as an essential part of what became known as punk funk—a blend of groove-laden funk with electronic elements and the energy and urgency of punk, stripped of its anger, discontent, and nihilism. On the contrary, their music is danceable and enthusiastic, transforming into a pure party during live performances. This explosive cocktail originated from the combination of members from the bands Black Liquorice and Pope Smashers when they toured together in 1995. Later, the vocalist Nick Offer, singer of the hardcore band Yah Mos, joined the party.
After several releases since their first single in 1998, they blew everything up in June 2003 with the maxi single “Me And Giuliani Down By The School Yard (A True Story)” released by Warp Records in Europe and Touch and Go in North America. Nine minutes of pure rhythm and guitar ecstasy, with a ‘Madchester’ flavor, became an anthem of that scene and the most underground and mischievous clubbing. The song protested against the unpopular measures of New York City’s mayor at the time, Rudolph Giuliani, enacted post-9/11 to limit the rights of the city’s clubs, dealing a blow to the scene.
Several other singles continued this party legacy: “Pardon My Freedom,” “Hello? Is This Thing On?,” “Take Ecstasy With Me / Get Up” (covers of The Magnetic Fields and Nate Dogg), “Heart of Hearts,” and “Must Be The Moon,” among others. Up to now, they have released nine albums, each with a unique and addictive sound, much like their live performances.
